It can provide evidence for claims related to sun protection, skin brightening and whitening, skin tone correction, soothing effects, increased microcirculation, revitalizing properties, anti-allergy and anti-irritation benefits, safety, anti-pollution properties, suitability for sensitive skin, self-tanning capabilities, color enhancement, color protection, improved healing, concealing imperfections, anti-aging effects, reduction of dark spots, age spots, couperosis, and dark circles. It can also be used to determine if products are non-photosensitive.
- With its versatility and precision, the Skin Colorimeter Flex is a game-changer in the field of color measurement for skin and hair.
How does Colorimeter Flex CL440 work?
Discover the inner workings of our revolutionary skin-colorimeter Flex CL 440. This cutting-edge device utilizes a probe that emits circularly arranged white LED light with a high color rendering index (CRI) to uniformly illuminate the skin. As the light interacts with the skin, some parts travel through the layers, while others are scattered out. The probe measures the reflected light and expresses it accordingly.
The unique design of the skin-colorimeter Flex CL 440 ensures that light points overlap as the probe gets closer to the skin surface, allowing for precise measurements even on the smallest skin areas. The device also comes with different sizes of interchangeable measuring tips to perfectly place it on any skin site, no matter how small.
To ensure accuracy, the raw data (XYZ-values) from the probe are corrected using a special color matrix, bringing them as close as possible to normal values. This allows the measured color to be calculated into different color spaces.
One such color space is the RGB color space, which encompasses all possible colors that can be made from red, green, and blue lights.
Another important color space is the CIELAB color space, also known as L*a*b*. Defined by the International Commission on Illumination (CIE), this color space represents the correlation between color and the human skin. The L* value provides information about the black-white axis, indicating the brightness or lightness of the skin. A higher L* value corresponds to a brighter skin tone. The a* value, located on the green-red axis, is proportional to erythema, which refers to the microcirculation or redness of the skin. A higher a* value indicates a higher level of erythema. Finally, the b* value, located on the blue-yellow axis, is often used to describe pigmentation.
In addition to these measurements, the skin colorimeter Flex CL 440 automatically calculates the Individual Typology Angle (ITA°) using the L* (luminance) and b* (yellow chromatic) values. This angle is an established tool for objectively assessing skin color and predicting the biological consequences of UV exposure on the skin. The lighter the skin, the higher the potential consequences.
- ITA° > 55° “very-light”
- 55° > ITA° > 41° “light”
- 41° > ITA° > 28° “intermediate”
- 28° > ITA° > 10° “tan”
- 10° > ITA° > – 30° “brown”
- – 30° > ITA° “dark”
Benefits of the Skin-Colorimeter Flex
- The Skin-Colorimeter Flex offers numerous benefits for accurate color measurements. Due to the composition of translucent layers, the absorption and reflection behavior of skin differs significantly from other materials, making color measurements complex. However, the Skin-Colorimeter probe is specially designed to accurately detect even the slightest color changes close to the skin surface, making it ideal for comparison measurements.
- With the utilization of advanced electronics, the Skin-Colorimeter Flex uses LED lights with a high color rendering index (CRI) for maximum accuracy.
- The Skin-Colorimeter Flex comes with two interchangeable measuring tips that provide optimal illumination for both larger and smaller skin areas. The cylindrical 13mm Ø illumination area, similar to the previous CL 400 model, is perfect for measuring skin and hair. Additionally, the conical 7mm Ø illumination area is ideal for smaller skin areas, pigmented spots and lesions, nails, lips, or other materials.
- A unique placement aid feature allows light spots to overlap each other as the probe gets closer to the skin surface, indicating the exact location of the measurement.
- Hygiene is a priority with the Skin-Colorimeter Flex. The electronics are sealed, and the removable tips can be easily cleansed.
- With a quick and easy measurement process that takes only 1 second, the Skin-Colorimeter Flex provides efficient results.
- For each measurement, the Skin-Colorimeter Flex automatically calculates the individual typology angle (ITA) using L* (luminance) and B* (yellow chromatic) values. This classification system categorizes skin colors into six categories, ranging from very light to dark.
- The probe applies a light and constant pressure on the skin surface, minimizing any effects on the skin’s microcirculation and color.
- The accuracy of the Skin-Colorimeter probe can be easily checked at any time.
- To conveniently place the probe directly on the hair surface, a hair clip is available.
- The Skin-Colorimeter Flex CL 440 probe is available as a stand-alone device MDD or connectable to the MPA systems .
