Mexameter® MX18
Assessing Melanin Content and Erythema Level of skin
HOW TO MEASURE MELANIN IN SKIN?
Melanin is a pigment found in skin, eyes, and hair. This pigment is dark brown to black, and the more melanin a body part has, the darker it appears.
Melanin measurement technology is an important tool for many professionals and fields. Here we explain why and how to measure melanin in the skin and present the Mexameter® MX 18.
WHY AND HOW TO MEASURE MELANIN ON SKIN?
Melanin can be measured by spectrophotometry—a standard and cost-effective technique for measuring melanin using a light beam.
This technology calculates melanin by measuring light absorption and reflection. First, a probe is placed on a sample and emits three light wavelengths. Then, a receiver measures the amount of light the skin reflects back.
A body part with more light absorption has higher melanin levels and is darker in color compared to one with more reflection. Body parts with more reflection are lighter in color and have lower melanin levels.
THE Mexameter® MX 18
The MX 18 is the gold standard spectrophotometry tool for quick, easy, and continuous measurement of two main components of skin color: melanin and hemoglobin (erythema). The MX 18 is used around the world in various fields, such as dermatology, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.
The MX 18 has a small and lightweight probe that provides highly sensitive measurements with easy handling. The probe delivers constant even pressure via the spring in its head, providing accurate and replicable results. Amazingly, the MX 18 produces results on a broad scale from 0 to 999 in 1 second to detect even the tiniest melanin/redness changes.
This technology also has a simple calibration check to confirm accuracy whenever you need it. The instrument is worldwide established and used in many scientific studies(Ask for list of studies…) .
Where to use:
- There are many fields of application where changes in the skin color are of interest.
- Many international scientific studies demonstrate its benefits in all important dermatological basic research and cosmetic application fields.
- It is indispensable in efficacy testing and claim support for cosmetics and pharmaceuticals (especially sunscreen and skin whitening products, skin soothing)
- In occupational health the skin irritation (erythema value) is of special interest to show the necessity of skin protection measures.
Quick fact Mexameter® MX18
- Very quick and easy measurement (1 second for the two results: melanin index and erythema index)
- Values displayed on a broad scale (0-999) for melanin and erythema so that even smallest changes in colour become traceable
- Simple check calibration for accuracy check at any time
- Minimum pressure effect thanks to internal spring so reproducible measurements.
- TheMexameter® MX18 probe is available as a stand-alone device MDD or connectable to the MPA systems or as a wireless probe.
