High-end 3D skin imaging system
MiniSURF
This compact and autonomous laboratory device is a full-field optical profilometer. It measures the microtopography of all samples, whether super-polished (i.e., optical and semiconductor) or structured (e.g., metal, nails, hair, and paper).
It does this by combining an imaging camera, a specific microscope, a piezoelectric motor, and cutting-edge software. The microscope and camera are fixed to a stable column mounted on a honeycomb table, ensuring vibration-free measurement and imaging. The piezoelectric motor enables phase-shifting interferometry, which allows the system’s micron-level measurement capabilities. Finally, the MiniSURF uses innovative software that detects and examines 3D surface data (e.g., porosity, roughness, and structure pattern density).

System Configuration
Technology
The MiniSURF system uses a specific microscope combined with an imaging camera and a piezoelectric motor for phase shifting technologies. Phase shifting interferometry is the base of all the measurement capabilities of this system. The microscope setup is mounted on a very stable column which is fixed on an honeycomb table to insure stability and vibration free measurement. A specific sample platform with tip/tilt capability, complete the setup to adjust fringes contrast and orientation.
Measuring Mode:
Different measurement algorithms can be used with the system to match surface structure. For surfaces structures, a confocal algorithm, based on fringe contrast, scan the surface in height up to 100 μm.
Software
The MiniSURF software helps you to acquire your surface structure using the different measurement modes, on single , multiple or combined areas, and can calculate different parameters like profiles and surface roughness, structure porosity, step height and defect detection, as well as comparison and volume. The software can visualize more than one measurement at a time to compare different structures.
Where is MiniSURF used?
Many industries use profilometers like The MiniSURF, especially those needing microtopographic information (mico surface structure and roughness).
Clinical research and the nail, skin, and hair care industries often require surface topography and porosity information. Thankfully, the MiniSURF can evaluate nail porosity and topography at the micron level to determine if they are healthy, the impacts of varnish, and how resistant varnish is to abrasion. It can also assess the effectiveness of skin, nail, and hair care products. Even engineered skin or ex-plant can be assessed at the micron level to determine corneocyte density and skin relief.
Other critical uses of the MiniSURF are measuring the surface qualities and structures of semiconductors, polymers, plastics, paper, textiles, metals, and ceramics, particularly in clinical research. For instance, the MiniSURF is a common tool used to measure the surface roughness of metallic surgical implants and different clinical practice materials. Profilometry is also used to identify toothpaste abrasivity and the surface roughness of teeth, dental porcelain, and ceramics using various finishing techniques.
